2017 - A Year of Events
In 2017, a number of major events were witnessed around the world. Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States, and his inaugural address was the shortest since Jimmy Carter's in 1977. In response to terrorist attacks in Tehran, Iran's Revolution Guards Corps fired six missiles into Syria. The attack was the most severe yet, but still, it was an impressive display of military power. In other news, the Trump administration announced that it would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
On the global economy, the Eurozone's economic growth was the best since 2000, and its unemployment rate was at a nine-year low. In the United States, the third-quarter economy grew 3.3 percent, and unemployment was at the lowest level since the year 2000. Meanwhile, China looks poised to beat its target of 6.5 percent growth for the year, and Russia has struggled to deal with sanctions over the Ukraine and oil prices.
The solar eclipse was one of the most anticipated events of the year, as millions of Americans made the journey to the path of totality, which spanned from Oregon to South Carolina. The eclipse lasted one hour and 33 minutes, and the excitement that surrounded it gave Americans something positive to look forward to. It was also a cool event to see. Despite the political upheaval, 2017 proved to be a year of events, and we are a stronger society for it.
